Lorem Who Now?

Did you know that Lorem Ipsum is not just random text? Written in 45BC by Cicero, The Extremes of Good and Evil has been used since the 1500s in a scrambled form as dummy text for all matters of design and page layout. Not just filler anymore huh?

But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness….

Just spent the last three days in Orlando for the Photoshop World Conference. Packed with classes and after hour meet and greets, I learned a ton of new tips, tricks and pixels that I can’t wait to try out. Feel like my brain just got zapped by a defibrillator. Someone get me a computer and a tablet stat!

What day is it?

Cars and Cigars

Hi all. It has been a while since I posted. I’ve been consumed with designing a theme for the annual Females About Business Gala. (It’s a James Bond theme: casinos, alcohol and sexy men and women. How can you go wrong?) As I surface for air I realized how much time has actually gone by. The event is this weekend and as we get closer I hope to post some of the layouts, that is if you don’t mind. Programs, signs and floor graphics oh my! I have been putting my compositing skills to the test. These next couple of days are my favorite though. I get to see my designs come to life so to speak. Things always look different once they are printed and I wait with baited breath…not really, I can’t hold my breath very long. Don’t get me wrong I am NOT complaining. My creative juices may need a recharge from that martini up there however. Hmmmmm….

Two for Tuesday (Part Two: How do you like them Apples?)

Part two of Two for Tuesday in the PC versus Mac debate is of course the cult classic Mac. Let’s face it, PC users seem to look at Macnatics (that’s my word!) as weird, artsy fartsy and well just different. It might be true. A majority of designers, graphic, web, illustrators, etc favor Mac over PC. They tend to get the more hipster stigma, I guess it comes with the territory. My hair has gone through several different colors of the rainbow in the past 6 months.

For starters the Mac operating systems have been a much more stable than Windows. There are less crashing issues and bugs to deal with, not to say Mac hasn’t had their fair share in them. Once you get passed the “backwards” configuration of all the controls (closing a window, full screen and minimize are all on the left) it’s a fairly easy system to work in. And YES there is right clicking! Because of it’s stability the graphics, web and video programs run pretty darn quick even as it tries to render files that are several gigabytes large which is the biggest appeal. No one ever wants to save a file and have to walk away for a while.

The biggest difference is the security. Macs are far less vulnerable to viruses and Trojan attacks than a PC. There have been some malware lately that targets a Mac but it hasn’t been anything too “life threatening.” So far so good?

Another difference is the appearance. All Apple products focus on their looks, so vain Apple…so vain. And yet fans are addicted to it. There was a series of commercials with a Mac being portrayed by a young hip guy while PC was the stiff middle class American in a suit. Funny, but I can kind of see it!

Regardless of which side you are on there are pros and cons for each. I say try them both and see which one you like better. You might be surprised what you end up with. (Brave enough to talk about Linux??…eep!)

Two for Tuesdays (Part One: Are you PC?)

Today’s Two for Tuesday Topic (say that 3 times fast!) is everyone’s favorite debate: PC versus Mac. Over 2 billion people worldwide use the internet with about 70% using it everyday and I am willing to bet each person has an opinion on which is the superior machine. It comes down to what you are using it for and let’s face it, whichever you are most comfortable with. Though I do have a favorite between the two we are not here to judge!

The main argument for PC being “better” is of course the price. You can purchase a fairly decent machine for well under $1,000 with many of the basic software already loaded and ready to use. PC also has the most compatibility with software. Some popular programs are only PC based which helps push users to choose them over a Mac, including some standards such as the Microsoft Office collection. There is nothing really comparable to this word processor and continue to dominate as the #1 in all offices and classrooms. (Sorry Office for Mac…maybe next time).

Games. Period. If you are a gamer PC is the way to go, not only because they are all compatible but what makes it top choice of machines is how flexible the hardware is. You want more RAM? No problem. Better graphics card? Easy peasy. Customizing your machine and repairs are usually cheaper because of the modular structure of a PC.

Fun Fact: PC people are 10% more likely than Mac people to snack on something sweet.

Degrees of Coincidence

I am finally putting the finishing touches on this site, and as it comes to “an end” it occurs on the end of another year of….me. My birthday is tomorrow. This was an interesting having to go back and catalog a lot of my work as I look back at another year that has passed, reminiscing on specifics of certain projects, the clients and what I had to go through to complete them.  There is an early episode of Seinfeld that jokes about this. Is it a coincidence? Is it big, small….fun-sized?? Regardless, here is to another post, another website and another year….cheers!

Rabbit, Rabbit

In trying to make an effort to stay focused and keep myself engaged in all things social media, I thought I would share an article I read this morning that although I’m not 100% sure I believe (or even 10%!) but it was really well written and I am going to need all the luck I can get in the next 3-4 months.

Breaking the Routine

SketchIt’s rare that I actually take time out for myself artistically. For close to ten years I cannot remember a time where I took a couple of hours and painted, sketched or even updated my website, though I gave it a feeble attempt back in 2013. It’s important even though difficult to do. You get caught up in projects or jobs that take so much of your time, energy and creativity that picking up a sketchbook is completely out of the question. I finally broke out of the rut! With my trusty #2B and 4H pencils in my hand it’s time to, well….make some art….my art.
